CONTEMPORARY ART INSPIRED BY
THE RHYTHMS OF NATURE

Close up textures in a coastal jetty painting

WELCOME

Welcome to my world, a place of colour, texture and storytelling, inspired by nature, memory and the sea.

This is where imagination meets memory, where the rhythms of nature find their way into layers of paint, collage and mark-making.

I create art that invites you to pause, feel, and wander, like the hush of waves, the shift of seasons, or half remembered edges of a dream.

About me

Hi, I'm Nell Burgess a contemporary abstract artist based in the UK, working primarily with mixed media. My process is intuitive and layered, combining paint, collage and mark-making to build works that are both abstract and evocative. I am passionate about creating pieces that bring a sense of calm, beauty and storytelling into the spaces they inhabit by exploring visual memories. Using colour and collage, and intuitive mark-making, I create work that balances abstraction with a sense of place. My practice is as much about the process as outcome, slowing down, listening, letting the materials guide me.

When I'm not in the studio, you'll often find me walking by the sea,

or noticing the small details of nature that will inspire my next piece.

Where I find

INSPIRATION

My work is deeply influenced by the natural world and the emotions it stirs. The British coast, where for me the sea with its endless tides has become a metaphor for memory, resilience and renewal, and the countryside where I am drawn to the fleeting beauty of the seasons. From the way colours and textures shift with light, to the quiet stories we carry within us. Whether it is a close up observation, or a sweeping landscape, the majesty of the mountains, or my connection with the Bay, it is all a source of inspiration which filters though into my mixed media art. I use layers to represent the layers of our lives, and the colours found in nature to influence my colour palettes. I feel abstraction gives the viewer the opportunity to make their own connections, and each piece I make is both an exploration and an offering, an attempt to capture something unspoken and universal.
